Ted Price, the former head of Insomniac Games, recently disclosed that the studio had once contemplated creating a fourth entry in the Resistance franchise, though the project ultimately never took off.
Creative Direction and Marketability
In a conversation with Kinda Funny Games, Price reflected on how enticing the concept seemed at the time.
He acknowledged its potential appeal both in terms of creative direction and marketability.
However, he clarified that it didn’t quite fit with the studio’s overall vision back then.
When asked whether the disappointing sales of Resistance 3 played a role in stepping back from the series, Price remained somewhat evasive.
He explained that Resistance 3 was crafted to wrap up key storylines, particularly those of the character Capelli.
This narrative conclusion was meant to keep future possibilities open, giving the team the chance to either return to the Resistance world or venture into new projects.
Resistance 3 and Its Impact
Resistance 3, released in 2011 for PlayStation 3, was a pivotal moment for the series, which was published by Sony while Insomniac functioned independently.
Although there was a spin-off, Resistance: Burning Skies, that debuted in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita, it was developed not by Insomniac, but by Nihilistic (now known as nStigate Games).
Future Developments
In 2012, Price publicly announced that Insomniac had decided to move away from the Resistance series.
He later elaborated in 2013, revealing that while they had seriously considered a fourth installment, the team opted instead to pivot towards Fuse, a cooperative third-person shooter.
This choice was made to avoid weariness with the franchise.
Following that decision, Insomniac found success with several major titles, including Ratchet & Clank (2016), Marvel’s Spider-Man, Sunset Overdrive, and Song of the Deep, before becoming part of Sony in 2019.
Most recently, Price has entered retirement from his leadership role at Insomniac, which currently focuses on the development of a Wolverine game.
