It’s been over 14 years since Resistance, the acclaimed alternate history shooter series from Insomniac Games, last graced our screens with its third entry.
Recent revelations suggest that fans could have experienced a fourth installment had the studio’s creative vision been accepted.
In a discussion led by Ted Price, the former head of Insomniac, it was shared that they had a “remarkable idea” for Resistance 4, but Sony ultimately chose not to pursue it.
Insomniac’s Vision for Resistance 4
Ted Price, who is stepping back after more than three decades with the studio, opened up about this intriguing pitch during a chat on Kinda Funny Gamescast.
When the conversation turned toward past pitches that left a significant impact, he shared insights about their aspirations for a sequel to Resistance.
Price described how the initial concept was born from the excitement of various team members eager to dive deeper into the game’s narrative.
He pointed out the compelling alternate history the Resistance series had crafted, filled with untapped potential revolving around the Chimera—its lore, evolution, and origins.
The team invested considerable time developing rich backstories and outlining myriad possibilities for future narratives within that universe.
Sony’s Decision and Fallout
Unfortunately, Price revealed that Sony wasn’t convinced by their proposal, citing “timing and market opportunity” as the main reasons for passing on the project.
While the specifics of these discussions remain somewhat unclear, it’s worth noting that as early as 2011, Insomniac mentioned they were “not slated” to work on Resistance 4.
By 2012, Price seemed to confirm that the franchise would not see any new entries, firmly stating they would not be moving forward with the series.
Despite the disappointing news for fans yearning for another adventure in the Resistance world, Price expressed a nostalgic longing for a revival of the series, highlighting its special place in his heart.
He noted that after dedicating so many years to one franchise, it’s essential to also explore new ventures, though the idea of revisiting beloved projects remains appealing.
Since Sony holds the rights to Resistance, he acknowledged that the door for returning to that universe would always remain slightly ajar.
Looking Ahead
Even with the absence of new title developments, Price stays optimistic regarding the future.
He believes that every experience holds meaning, whether it’s a critically acclaimed game, a lesser-known title, or even unfulfilled projects.
All these experiences, he feels, have laid the groundwork for Insomniac’s ongoing success, particularly in its fruitful partnership with Marvel.
As for what lies ahead, Insomniac is currently focused on their much-anticipated project, Wolverine.
Announced in 2021, there’s no release date in sight just yet.
While the studio is excited to share more about Wolverine, they’re urging fans to be patient until they’re ready to unveil further details—reflective of the character Logan’s own cautious nature.
Even amidst all the excitement for new projects, they’ve made it clear that some information will have to remain under wraps for now.
