Netflix is embarking on an exciting new journey with a series titled *The Forgotten Realms*, inspired by the popular Dungeons & Dragons franchise.

At the helm of this project is Shawn Levy, celebrated for his direction on hits like *Deadpool* and *Wolverine*.

According to Deadline, the writing and showrunning responsibilities have been entrusted to Drew Crevello, while Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment teams up with Hasbro Entertainment for production.

Distinct Path Within a Beloved Universe

While *The Forgotten Realms* is set in a beloved D&D campaign setting, it will carve its own path, distinct from the characters and storylines found in the recent film *Honor Among Thieves* or any other D&D adaptations.

This new series aims to serve as a launchpad for a more expansive Dungeons & Dragons universe on Netflix, potentially leading to new series and original films in the future.

Strategic Vision for Expanded Universes

This initiative aligns with the strategic vision of Wizards of the Coast, the parent company behind Dungeons & Dragons, which is also exploring the creation of a shared universe for *Magic: The Gathering*, spanning both film and TV.

In fact, Netflix is concurrently working on an animated series for the *Magic: The Gathering* franchise, though there’s been no announcement of any live-action projects in that particular realm.

Broader Media Footprint and Future Ventures

Following the remarkable success of *Baldur’s Gate 3*, Hasbro is reportedly eyeing new video game ventures tied to both Dungeons & Dragons and *Magic: The Gathering*.

Additionally, the franchise continues to broaden its media footprint, as showcased by a recent standalone episode featuring Dungeons & Dragons that aired as part of Amazon Prime Video’s *Secret Level*.

This marks another step in establishing a robust presence across various platforms.
