Star Trek: Section 31 has had a somewhat disappointing response from both critics and fans.

However, the film manages to surprise viewers with an unexpected cameo at the conclusion.

Film Overview

Although you might not have heard much about it due to its low-key marketing, there’s a new addition to the Star Trek franchise.

This latest installment, Star Trek: Section 31, is available exclusively for streaming on Paramount+ and is not showing in theaters.

In this film, Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as the darker version of Philippa Georgiou, first introduced in Star Trek: Discovery.

This time, her character teams up with the Federation and its secretive division, Section 31.

The storyline revolves around her efforts to gather a team for a speculative sci-fi mission.

As the plot unfolds, viewers reach a rather anticlimactic conclusion featuring the team bonding over drinks.

Out of nowhere, the holographic visage of Control, the team’s leader, makes an appearance, catching many off guard.

Surprising Cameo

Spoiler Alert: If you plan to watch this film, be warned!

The character of Control is voiced by none other than Jamie Lee Curtis.

She appears in the film’s closing moments, sporting futuristic cybernetics reminiscent of the Borg.

In a brief but pivotal segment, she imparts crucial information regarding the team’s next mission, teasing a sequel that is unlikely to come to fruition.

Director Olatunde Osunsanmi shared an interesting tidbit about Curtis’s involvement; her connection to the project stems from an interesting family tie—her agent is the cousin of Alex Kurtzman, a producer for Star Trek.

What follows after Curtis’s holographic appearance is a light-hearted moment among the team.

One member quips about the planet they’re assigned to, prompting another to jokingly retort with “Your Mama.” This playful exchange evokes chuckles, making the scene a bit more enjoyable as it awkwardly fades out.

Reception and Alternatives

Given the film’s mixed reception, many fans might be better off skipping Section 31.

Instead, they could revisit beloved classics like Deep Space Nine, which was the series that first introduced Section 31, or indulge in the well-received Strange New Worlds on Paramount+.

Alternatively, a quick nap may offer a more satisfying experience than watching Section 31.
