Esports platform Start.gg has recently announced its return to independence after spending over four years under Microsoft’s ownership.
Formerly known as Smash.gg, the platform was acquired by Microsoft several years ago.
Now, Start.gg is ready to reestablish itself as a standalone entity, reaffirming its dedication to both grassroots and professional esports communities.
Transition and Community Engagement
In expressing his gratitude, Chris Ogle, co-founder of the original Smash.gg, thanked Microsoft and Xbox for their assistance during the acquisition phase.
He reassured the community that the platform would continue to be run by the original team, alongside passionate tournament organizers and engineers, all committed to improving the user experience.
Changes to the Platform
As part of this shift towards independence, Start.gg is implementing a new registration fee starting February 14.
This fee aims to cover the platform’s operational expenses and ensure its long-term viability.
Alongside this change, users can look forward to an upgraded user interface and enhanced tournament support features.
Looking Ahead
Since its inception in 2015, Start.gg has been dedicated to fostering communities centered around popular games.
This mission remains at the heart of their operations as they look to build on their experiences with existing and future supporters.
Despite facing some challenges in the gaming industry, the esports scene continues to thrive.
The record attendance at last year’s Evo 2024 is a testament to this vibrant community.
Looking forward, Evo 2025 promises to carry this momentum, with its anticipated return to Las Vegas scheduled for August 1 to 3.
