Exciting News for Wii Enthusiasts

Mark your calendars! On January 3, 2025, Nintendo Wii enthusiasts received thrilling news: the beloved Guitar Hero franchise is making a comeback with the launch of the Hyper Strummer controller, a fresh take on gaming nostalgia.

The Guitar Hero series, which first took the world by storm in November 2005, has seen some quiet years.

Its last major release, Guitar Hero Live, arrived in 2015, leaving fans eagerly awaiting any hint of new content since then.

Despite the long pause, the enthusiasm for Guitar Hero remains strong, and now, gamers can rejoice as a new controller heads to the Wii later this month.

Details on the Hyper Strummer Controller

Hyperkin, a well-known name in gaming accessories, has officially announced that preorders for the Hyper Strummer are open today, with the controller hitting shelves on January 8.

This innovative controller is designed to be compatible with both Guitar Hero and Rock Band games available on the Wii, with the exception of the original Rock Band game.

With a design that harkens back to the original Guitar Hero controllers, the Hyper Strummer is powered by the Wii remote, eliminating the hassle of replacing batteries.

While it carries a price tag of $77—considered somewhat premium—Hyperkin appears to have taken into account the dedicated fanbase of Guitar Hero and Rock Band players on the Wii before rolling out this updated edition.

The Future of Guitar Hero

The future of the Guitar Hero franchise, however, remains a bit murky.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard means that decisions regarding any new titles rest in their hands.

Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, previously expressed interest in the franchise during its peak years, hinting at the possibility of a revival.

Back in 2022, Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, mentioned ongoing discussions about bringing Guitar Hero back.

However, updates on these conversations have been scarce.

Although Guitar Hero was nominated for induction into the Strong Museum’s Video Game Hall of Fame for its 2024 class, it ultimately did not secure a spot.

Excitement is in the air as Wii fans anticipate the Hyper Strummer release, but they’ll also be watching closely for any news about the future of the Guitar Hero series.
