The Ricochet initiative, designed to combat cheating in Call of Duty, has openly acknowledged some of its past shortcomings.
Recognition of Shortcomings
In 2021, Activision rolled out the Ricochet anti-cheat system aimed at curbing the rampant cheating seen in Call of Duty games.
Recently, however, the Ricochet team has candidly addressed some obstacles they faced during Season 1 of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
On their official website, the Ricochet team conveyed that the initial launch of their anti-cheat measures for Ranked Play left much to be desired.
They recognized that the competitive landscape of Ranked Play—complete with tantalizing leaderboards—proved to be a significant temptation for cheaters, necessitating a focused effort to bolster the fairness of the gaming experience.
Increased Monitoring Efforts
To counter these challenges, the team is ramping up their monitoring efforts.
This includes more regular account bans, potentially happening hourly.
They’re also increasing the number of gameplay clips that undergo manual reviews, complementing existing AI tools that identify violations through the Replay feature.
Additionally, cheaters will now be swiftly removed from leaderboards, aligning their expulsion more effectively with current investigations.
Though the Ricochet system has drawn criticism for mistakenly flagging innocent players—many of whom have now had their accounts restored—the surge of cheaters at Black Ops 6’s launch was unexpected.
Activision explained that a system outage compromised the efficiency of their AI detection systems, contributing to this spike.
Future Plans and Community Involvement
The Ricochet team concluded their communication by urging players to report any instances of cheating they witness.
They further hinted that major updates to the anti-cheat framework are on the horizon, coinciding with Seasons 2 and 3 of Black Ops 6.
In addition to tackling Ricochet-related issues, Activision recently deployed a patch for Black Ops 6 aimed at fixing other gameplay concerns.
Players have also stumbled upon a significant Easter egg in the Nuketown map and are buzzing with excitement over a possible collaboration between Treyarch and Netflix’s Squid Game.
